The winter months are a challenge for horse/pony's and their owners. Horses and ponies must cope with everything the weather can throw at them, and owners must rise to the challenges of the extra care and attention needed by their four-legged friends.
- Does your field have some type of shelter so that they can get out of the snow and rain?
- Does your horse have company? Even if this means sharing your field Horses and Ponies are social animals and enjoy the company of others.
- Have you got a good supply of extra feed? Could be that you are snowed in and just can not get to them until later in the day than usual
- Are you registered with a Vet? This is Essential for the health of your animal
- Make sure you groom your pet well especially after you have been for a ride. Try and remove is could wall traces of sweat as this could lead to a chill if not done properly.
- A good blanket is worth the expense so that your pet is warm.
Make arrangements with an experienced person to take care of your horse in the event of an emergency, for example if you are ill, delayed or cut off by bad weather. Network amongst local horse owners you may be able to share horse care with a like-minded friend.
Remember to bring your Rabbits and G.Pigs inside to the Garage or shed through the Cold winter months.
I know our Jack Russell Bonnie hates it in the winter when she goes out the back in the summer we can not get her in she loves her garden, In the winter its completely different she is out done and back in within minutes and runs to her bed and dives under her blanket. It is really funny to watch sometimes.

In the case of cats, we suggest providing enough litter trays, filled with the cat's preferred litter, indoors at all times of year. During the winter the ground outside may freeze, and cats who usually toilet outdoors may be put off from doing so, so it is very important they have suitable toilet facilities indoors.
Give your little darlings whatever they may be that extra bit of love in the wintertime xx
